January results, commentedeasy19 (2266) vs. bastalex (2129) , ended 16-Jan-10 game Brilliant tactic game... white makes two sacrifices after having taken advantage from a too hungry black opening... wonderful. Fireworks start at 9.e4, that allows black's b4 and 11. Nxe4, a pawn's sacrifice only apparent, because of white's response 11. Qc2, threatening both the knight and c6's pawn. After a tense middlegame, white starts a cool combination with 21. Ng5, exposing his pieces to f6. Black doesn't take this chance, but plays 21. h6 instead, overlooking 22. Nxe6, based on a very deep calculation. White follows with moves that are not the ones you can see at a first glance, and offers a pawn (29. d6) and goes on with anoher sac, 30. RxNd6, that opens the c column keeping the black king in the center. Threats are multiple after 32. Nf7+, black resigns. Very deep calculations by white, in a game in which he is dominating all the time. Runner up: BRIGADECOMMANDER brigadecommander (2044) vs. original_sin (1900) Ended: 24-Jan-10 gameknot.com After a slow opening, the game seems even, but white starts a very deep sequence with 16. a3-a4 (an apparent sacrifice), without fearing black's answer b5-b4, foreseeing he will easily recover the pawn (20.Rxb2), and correctly evaluates the pressure he will have with the passed b pawn, even allowing black to exchange a knight for the lsb (20. ..., Nc3). then slowly increases pressure over black's passive position, forcing double passed pawns (26.d3-c5). Follows an apparently stalled situation, having black with a potentially dangerous free a pawn, that white meets with a long king's journey towards the queenside. In doing this, white defends correctly from all black's attempts to harass white's king after 37. ... d5-d4 (and following moves), with remarkable cool blood... and becomes so strong he can offer a rook for a bishop without fear (46.Rxe4, I would say decisive). Apparently black overlooked the purpose of move 48. Kc3, and looses after the tactic threat 49. Be7, that forces the loss of a rook. 3ยบ place: SONATA269 sonata269 (1419) vs. checkmate29000 (1971), ended 23-jan-10 gameknot.com The game transposes to an open line of the French. It follows the database until move 9, when white plays Nh3, that looks better than the database's move. White has lost castling rights and has a knight on the side of the board, no pawns in the center, but Black allows 10. BxNf6, opening the g column, allowing a nice attack by white, probably hoping in his counterattack on the queenside. White defends creating a pawn chain, then finds the time to go on with his kingside attack, and has a good move, 23. f6, followed by the very nice 28. Nd6. White goes on pushing by placing his bishop in c4 when black moves his rook to b8, a very active position. Black regains energy in his counterattack and gets a very dangerous free a pawn. White, on his side, gets his king fiercely into the fight (42. Kc7), while keeping the black king trapped. Follows a very sharp tactic moment, involving 47. Re8!, that forces black to lose a quality. Then, white sets a mate threat (49. h5!), but unfortunately doesn't see 50. f8=Q, that would have forced Bxf8 Rf7#, but goes after the black's dsb instead. Black takes his chance to crown, followed by white, who by this time is a full rook up. Black saves himself by checking white's king until a tactic gets him stalled (very nice!). Sonata269 could have won the game, probably, but he had more than 500 points disadvantage over his opponent, so I consider this a wonderful performance by him. In case someone sees another game with a similar result (a draw against a more than 500 superior ELO), and asks why he is not in the third's place, I give the verbal comment: 4. JSTEVENS1'S ENTRY jstevens1 (1772) vs. renniemay (2288) , Ended: 20-Jan-10 gameknot.com The game starts with a sharp line of the Berlin defence, called the Cordel variation, following Zatulovskaya, Tatiana vs. Kruchonok, Svetlana's game until move 26, when black goes out of the database with Rb2. By the time, white has a free a column's pawn, a remarkable achievement against a more than 500 higher ELO. Afterwards, white exchanges pieces but overlooks a tactic that allows black to take the a pawn (35. f2-f3 allows Qe3+, followed by Bxa4). After this, black, despite of his pawn, cannot exchange queens then he cannot make his advantage more concrete, so it's a draw. There is no way to know if one or both players have followed the database or not. And to look at the DB is a normal practice in correspondence plays, so there is anything bad about it. But the spirit of this contest, I believe, is to award the most original game... |

Judging GKIt took so much time, trying to say things that make sense, and I am sure that probably I overlooked a lot of implications of the moves that apparently look good or bad... I am worried about the fact that low rated players can feel discouraged having theirs games in the same contest than, say, over-2000 ones. I think that it would be a good policy to have some way to ensure players will be "equalized", somehow, to their respective skills. I mean a "mathematical" way, not only a subjective appreciation. Another thing is that I think that with 3 judges we need one of them to have a "main" role, coordinating the results and being responsible of the final post. Finally... I am taking all this "not too seriously", meaning that we are not speaking about the Nobel prize. I think this is shared by all, and I welcome to keep it that way. I think, too, that discussion about the games is much more interesting that to give some kind of "mark" or "prize" to them. I would care much more about knowing how experienced players look to my games than to be the winner or not. When I read comments of famous plays by two different reviewers, I find such big differences in how they comment the same moves, that it almost scares me. I wonder what others would have said about the games I reviewed, really... and not only a number from 1 to 10! :-) |

re: Judging GK - demalfi's commentsYour comments themselves show that you are certainly qualified to be on the panel of judges. A big "thank you" to you and the others who looked at our games. That took a lot of time, effort, and caring about your fellow players and the game of chess itself. Thanks again. Warren (oldgus) |

Also congratulations to the the runner ups all the games where of a high quality And as response on Damalfi wen i was the judge i took the players skill into account. so bad move from a 1200 rated player was of lighter wait then that same move made by a 1800 player A cool combination made by a 1200 has a higher value then that same combination played by a 1800.. It is hard to find a balance in that but wen you give it some thought i is fair enough |

damalfi Things are fine with the way we are doing things. One suggestion however would be to have a winner in each rating catagory such as 1200 and below,1300-1600 ect.But really the way you guys are doing it is just fine. And fun too!! i find myself looking at all the submitted games every month very carefully and i enjoy going over them. I also feel i'm making some friends. None of that real mean spirited stuff that goes on in live tournaments these days. Thank you all,the players and the Judges!!...Janet |

The Rules1) Each player may submit 1 of their games per month. He does not have to submit a game if he does not want to, but no more than one game per person please! 2) You must post a LINK to the game as a reply in this message thread. 3) Players entering their games must belong to this club - that's obvious :-) 4) The game does not have to be an actual "club game" - any game that has been played ON GAMEKNOT by the player entering will be eligible (blitz games excluded because you cannot link them). 5) The deadline for all games to be judged for each month is the LAST DAY of the month - for example, the deadline for games being entered in the June Game of the Month will be the 30th June. 6) The game must have ended in the month you are entering it in (i.e. to be eligible for the Febuary GotM the game must have ended in Febuary). If you have questions/concerns, feel free to post and a moderator will help you. |

My Game of the Month for March 2010I would like to submit this game between me and Coach Ion. Although I was on the defensive in this game at least it held enough for Ion to accept my draw offer! gameknot.com This time I was only in the World Database until move 15. Ion deviated on move 16. Accurate defense is a big achievement I feel, especially against someone of Coach Ion's calibre. Hope you have a good read. Bye for now. Joanne |

Entry for GotM March:Big tactical shots are rather back-stage in this game. A spectacular Queen offer gets (rightly) declined, and a threatened rook breakthrough on the h-file never allowed to happen. game A rather arcane sort of game, this. It will be interesting to see what the judges make of it. By the way, at the point that White timed out, he was completely lost. Cheers, Ion |
