5.Bxf7+
There are some very good positions that arise form this line, I think it is better that 5.Nxf7.

5.Bxf7+
agree with charles and the others. i don't know at all this opening but this move looks the more logical to me.

6.Bd5
6.Bd5 has been white's best choice since the 70's, black should try 6...Rf8 or 6...d6.
This game will be a battle on every move against Freddy.

6.Bc4 Rf8
6.Bc4 d5

Freddy as black
6.Bb3 Na5 draw game 48 moves
6.Bd5 d6

6.Bb3
6.Bb3 does seem to have the better results against Freddy, so I vote for Bd3.

The problem with playing Freddy is that when he chooses an obscure opening, it means he has studied it extensively. When I started playing against him, I used to often use study materials in the openings to help me pick what would be the best move then find that I didn't know enough about the resulting variations to be able to gain a win from a position that was slightly ahead. The only times I've gained points against him is when I've used moves that I've either reasoned out myself or are from positions I've studied well enough to be confident of the variations.

With this in mind, I've not extensively studied any lines. My personal preference is 6.Bc4, this is mainly to try and get some development done quickly (looking at Nc3 or Nf3 for Nxd4). I'd also consider 6.Bb3, for similar reasons.

However, from what little I have read on the opening, the suggestion is Bd5.

If you pin me down to one move, my vote is 6.Bc4.

6.Bb3
6.Bd3 keeps d5 clear for the queen knight as well as giving us more options on move 7.
If 6...Rf8 7.d3! d6 8.Be3
If 6...d6 7.d3 (clearing d2 & threatening 8.Nf7)

Move 7.
The game untateve (1744) vs. easy19 (2274) went 7.Nc3 d6 8.Nd5+ Kf8 9.d3 Nxb3 10.axb3 c6 11.Nxf6 gxf6 12.Nf3 Rg8 Freddy won in 47 moves.

I think 7.Nf7 gives us more chances.

paolo2504

7. c3 ?
If i were playing on black side, after 7. Nf7 i would be tempted to play:
7. ..Bxf2+ 8. Kf1 Qf8 9. Nxh8 d6 10. Qf3...
A scenario for sure still open to any development but unsecure imho.

rationale for 7.d3?
surfdude, what's your rationale for d3?

At the moment my choice would be Nf7, though it seems like the sharply double-edged
position easy seems to love......

cadavre-opa-

I'm going to struggle to convince anyone of my preference here. . .

I like both 7.Ba4 and 7.d4. Under no circumstances should 7.Nf7 be chosen, Freddy will be very prepared for it having played through the line several times. I'm sure by now he will have an optimal line, whereas we'd be flying blind.

Now, my preference is 7.Ba4. I'm not really sure why I prefer it to 7.d4, it's a feeling. It feels "right". Blocks off an avenue of escape for the black king towards our queenside, making him more cramped. I'd expect 7...d5 as a response, then we can look at 8.exd5 Qxd5 9.O-O. Freddy may go with 8...a6 instead, or maybe 8...c6(?).

I'm not averse to 7.d4, which almost forces 7...Nxb3 8.axb3. But I prefer the Ba4 idea.

18-Jun-10, 16:36

Just spotted surfdude's 7.d3 idea. I like it, but worry about the potenial of black getting a bishop to g4, with the knight on f6 backing the attack and taking some of the initiative from us.

We need to remember in this game that Freddy has all the maneuverability. We need to take advantage of his defense quickly, keep him reacting rather than allow him time to breathe.
